REGISTERING YOUR ATV'S & SNOWMOBILES

Out-of-State Registration

Owners of ATVs, off-highway motorcycles, or snowmobiles brought into Utah by non-residents must obtain a non-resident permit for their machine.  To obtain a non-resident permit, you must provide proof of out-of-state residency and that the OHV is not owned by a Utah resident. Non-resident permits can be obtained either through the mail or through an authorized vendor.


Applying in person:

Permits are available in person at authorized vendeor locations throughout the state of Utah.
When applying in person, you will need the following:

  1. Proof of residency: driver's license or other state issued identification.
  2. Proof of ownership

Revenues generated from OHV user fees are dedicated to construction, improvement, operation and maintenance of OHV trails.

In-State Registration

All OHVs must display a current OHV registration sticker when operated or transported on public lands or roads. Off-highway motorcycles may be registered as street legal if they are safety inspected and insured. OHV registrations expire annually on the last day of the month the OHV was purchased.

Obtain registration from the Utah Division of Motor Vehicles.


Registration decals must be mounted in a visible location as follows:

  • Motorcycles - on each fork.
  • Snowmobiles - On both sides of the hood, pan or tunnel
  • All other off-highway vehicles - On the front and rear of the vehicle

Utah Laws for Youth ages 8-16 

Utah law requires youth ages 8 to 16 to complete the Utah State Parks and Recreation Know Before You Go! OHV education course before operating on public lands, roads or trails. It is illegal for any child under age eight to operate an OHV on public land.

Education classes teach:

  • safe riding
  • proper machine sizing
  • weight distribution
  • responsible and ethical riding
  • proper handling and shifting
  • riding within your ability

Other OHV - Helmet Rules

Be aware that all OHV riders under 18 must wear a helmet.
